Board of Health tables kratom regulation vote pending further review

Board of Health · Meeting of March 4, 2026

WAKEFIELD — Board of Health tables kratom regulation vote pending further review. The board heard public comment from residents about kratom use and reviewed FDA and CDC safety information presented by Health Director Anthony Chui and Tobacco Inspector Maureen Buzby, finding no reliable scientific evidence establishing the substance as safe and citing concerns about product inconsistency, contaminants, and local availability increases. The board agreed to revisit the matter at its April 15 meeting.

In other business, the board unanimously approved the waiver or reduction of dumpster permit late fees for four applicants who had experienced difficulties with the OpenGov portal and email communication.
