Town Council examines FY27 budget deficit, explores $500K-$1.2M in cuts.

Wakefield's Town Council, School Committee, and Finance Committee reviewed a $1.355 million projected deficit for FY27 and structural challenges threatening reserve compliance by FY28. Town Administrator Denise Y. Casey and Acting Assistant Town Administrator of Finance Elizabeth Rourke presented revenue projections driven by a $2 million investment income forecast and declining permit revenues of roughly $700,000.
Finance Committee member Daniel Sherman presented two scenarios: a 3 percent departmental cap yielding $1.2 million in savings, or a "balanced approach" including zero OPEB contribution and a parking lot delay yielding $62,000 surplus. Council Member Jonathan P. Chines proposed targeted $500,000 in operating cuts to close the remaining gap without one-time funds.
Sherman projected a $1.6 million deficit for FY28, intensifying pressure for personnel cost controls in upcoming contract negotiations.
