Wakefield School Committee tables handbooks, tightens attendance rule

School Board · Meeting of August 11, 2026

Wakefield School Committee tables new handbooks, tightens Wakefield Memorial High attendance-failure rule. The committee voted 4-0 to table the 2026-27 Preschool/Elementary, Galvin and high school handbooks for adoption in two weeks. High school Principal Amy said the attendance-failure threshold, unchanged for years despite a state shift to a 10 percent chronic-absenteeism standard, will now trigger a 59 percent grade after more than five unexcused absences in a class per quarter, saying "high school kids are savvy" about avoiding penalties.

Christine, presenting year-end financials, said the district spent its entire fiscal 2026 local budget but saw revolving account balances drop roughly $1 million from a year earlier. Payroll warrants and the meeting's adjournment were both approved unanimously. Superintendent Doug reported new high school construction, including terrazzo and gym flooring, is progressing, with an alumni walkthrough targeted for November.
