Wakefield Town Meeting Passes Dog Fines Increase, Approves $3.7 Million in Infrastructure Borrowing

WAKEFIELD — May 5, 2026 — Wakefield Town Meeting votes to raise dog fines and expand waste enforcement town-wide on second night. Voters on May 5 approved raising dog violation penalties to $100 for a first offense, $200 for a second, and $300 for subsequent offenses, and removed language that had restricted the solid waste excretion provision to areas "immediately abutting any body of water," after defeating both a motion for indefinite postponement and a proposed amendment to exempt dog parks from waste enforcement. The meeting also unanimously approved more than $3.7 million in borrowing: $1 million for drainage upgrades in the flooding-prone Emerson and Cedar Street neighborhood, $1,560,000 for Phase 16 of the MWRA sewer infiltration and inflow program at zero percent interest with 75 percent forgiven as a grant, $1 million for lead service line investigation and replacement ahead of a November 2027 federal deadline, and $100,000 as a local match for a Mass Trails grant to build a Richardson Street rail-trail parking facility. A $100,000 feasibility study for the 129-year-old Greenwood Elementary School passed 68 to 2. Permanent Building Committee member Joe Bertrand reported the new Wakefield Memorial High School is 80 percent complete, on time, and on budget for a December 2026 opening.
