Wakefield School Committee approved policy updates and warned a spending freeze is coming as reserves thin.
School Committee · Meeting of February 10, 2026
Wakefield School Committee approved policy updates and warned a spending freeze is coming as reserves thin. Members voted 7-0 by roll call to enter executive session over bargaining strategy and Superintendent Douglas Lyons' contract, then unanimously approved January 27 minutes, payroll warrants, and a revised policy manual section. School Business Administrator Christine Bufagna said the available balance stood at $2.2 million, under 4 percent of the budget, with special education transportation costs up roughly 12 percent, saying "we've seen a dramatic increase in special ed tuition costs." Lyons reported the SEAM Collaborative's fiscal 2027 cost to Wakefield will rise to $186,300, still saving about $400,000 versus private placements.
The committee chair, named only as Kevin, said all children "have a right to a free and appropriate education" regardless of immigration status.
