School Committee Extends Lyons' Contract to 2031
Wakefield School Committee extended Superintendent Douglas Lyons' contract through 2031.
School Committee · Meeting of June 23, 2026
Wakefield School Committee extended Superintendent Douglas Lyons' contract through 2031. The board voted unanimously for a 7.5 percent salary adjustment for fiscal 2026 and 2027 plus 3 percent annual raises through the new term, after a labor subcommittee found Lyons was the lowest-paid superintendent in the Middlesex League. Members also approved a $269,488.69 food-services fund transfer, with Food Service Director Dustin O'Brien warning the program is "at the point where this will be tough to sustain" amid rising labor and food costs.
The committee greenlit a $4,388 Paris-Barcelona student trip for 2027 and heard from two Greenwood Elementary parents who reported "nine days over 80 degrees" in June and asked for a formal heat-response policy. A $1,502 Walton School PTO donation for classroom audio equipment was also accepted unanimously.
