School Committee · Meeting of June 9, 2026
Wakefield School Committee unanimously endorsed state pension reform legislation affecting roughly two dozen veteran teachers. Member Kevin Fontanella explained that "retirement plus," created in 2001, lets teachers retire up to three years earlier, but teachers hired before that year were often left out due to rollout confusion; he said a Senate version of the buy-in bill, S.1884, could cost teachers up to $48,000 versus roughly $15,000 under the House version, H.4361. School Business Administrator Christine Bufagna reported the district's fiscal 2026 budget had just over $315,000 remaining with one month left.
Superintendent Douglas Lyons recognized seven of 13 retiring staff, including 34-year science teacher Jeffrey West, saying "the people make the place." The committee also approved payroll warrants and set subcommittee assignments for the coming year.
