School Committee · Meeting of May 26, 2026

Wakefield's School Committee voted 4-3 to limit new school choice seats to the high school, rejecting a wider plan that would have added students in grades 7 and 8. Members Thomas Markham and Kevin Fontanella split over the proposal, with Fontanella calling the revenue gain "not worth the squeeze" given class-size strain and tax-equity concerns, while Superintendent Douglas Lyons defended it as "a conservative proposal." The approved plan opens three seats per grade in grades 9 through 12, 12 students total, generating $60,000 a year. An earlier amendment from Peter Davis to add grade 4 seats failed 3-4.

School Business Administrator Christine Bufagna also reported a roughly $400,000 year-to-date balance, and the committee elected Kevin Piskadlo chair and Melissa Quinn vice chair for 2026-27.
