Superintendent David DiBarri announced that Northeast Metro Tech has received three awards from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education recognizing the school's State Seal of Biliteracy Program for the 2024-2025 school year.

The awards were presented Oct. 26 at the Multilingual Education Leaders Network Fall Convening by Massachusetts Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Pedro Martinez.

Northeast Metro Tech received the Gold Star Award, given to schools where at least 20% of graduates earn the State Seal of Biliteracy while meeting equity benchmarks. The school also received the College, Career, and Technical Education Access Commendation for expanding Seal of Biliteracy opportunities for students in career and technical education programs, and the Inclusive Access Commendation for providing students with disabilities access to the program.

The State Seal of Biliteracy recognizes students who demonstrate proficiency in English and one or more additional languages, celebrating linguistic skills that can benefit students in higher education or future careers.

Northeast Metro Tech's State Seal of Biliteracy Coordinator Sandra Carreno said, "Receiving these awards is a tremendous honor and a proud moment for our entire school community. What makes this recognition especially meaningful is seeing our students' language skills and cultural backgrounds celebrated as valuable strengths. The Seal of Biliteracy gives students an opportunity to take pride in their multilingual abilities while opening doors to future educational and career opportunities. I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together and, most importantly, of the opportunities we continue to create for our students."

The honors reflect the collaborative efforts of the school's administration, curriculum coordinator, teachers, counselors, staff and students.

Superintendent DiBarri said, "These awards reflect our commitment to ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed and demonstrate their abilities. We are proud of the work our students and staff have done to celebrate multilingualism, promote equity and make the Seal of Biliteracy Program accessible to every student in the Northeast Metro Tech community."
