WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Town Council voted 6-1 to renew a three-year regional health and human services agreement with Melrose and Stoneham, with Councilor Butler casting the lone dissent. Senior Planner Marissa Meany and Affordable Housing Trust Chairperson Gail Sievert briefed the council on the trust's $760,000 fund and a proposed "fee in lieu" zoning amendment that would let developers pay roughly $250,000 instead of rounding up fractional affordable-unit requirements, headed toward a fall Town Meeting vote. Sievert said "development is going to happen whether you like it or not." The council also unanimously appointed Jenna McMillan as the shared Wakefield-Melrose-Stoneham animal control officer, confirmed eight Wakefield Youth Council members 6-0 with one abstention, and introduced new Assistant Town Administrator Jen Breaker.
Councilor Butler said the health department has "dramatically expanded their footprint" since the pandemic and argued the town should manage it alone.
