Select Board · Meeting of September 14, 2026

WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Town Council voted 5-2 to advance two Envision Wakefield design alternatives, rejecting a bid to halt the project. Councillor John Carney moved to "bring this train to a halt" over lost angled parking and traffic concerns, then withdrew the motion pending a town counsel opinion on the council's authority. Engineer Bill Renaud told the council the town has spent $2.7 million on design to date against an overall construction estimate he gave as "approximately $45, $57 million." The council approved a no-bike-lane configuration for Main and Water Street and the existing shared-use-path design near the Galvin Middle School, both 5-2, with Carney and Councillor Chrisley opposed.

Councillor Constance said the council lacks authority to stop a town-meeting-funded project. The council separately approved a three-year Local 272 union contract with 2.5 percent annual raises and set November 16 as the next town meeting date.
