The office of State Representative Kate Lipper-Garabedian announced Oct. 21 that she will host her fifth annual Recycling & Sustainability Day for Wakefield on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Galvin Middle School.

The event is organized in partnership with the Wakefield Department of Public Works, the Wakefield Municipal Gas & Light Department, and other local and statewide organizations. Lipper-Garabedian, the 2025 Keep Massachusetts Beautiful Environmental Legislator of the Year, is a member of the Legislative Zero Waste Caucus.

At the event, residents can learn about existing programs and new Community Solar options through Wakefield Gas & Light, which will also collect and dispose of dehumidifiers free of charge. A shredding truck will be on site for document destruction. The Wakefield Environmental Sustainability Committee will collect black plastic items such as takeout containers and plant pots. Reservoir will demonstrate smart electric water heaters.

There is no fee per car for residents to drop off household items for upcycling with Habitat for Humanity or furniture for recycling with Project Home Again, though those groups reserve the right to refuse poor quality items. Green Team Junk Removal will recycle outdated electronics with data erasure.

Fees apply for certain items: $10 for rigid plastics such as laundry baskets and storage bins, $20 each for TVs and monitors, $10 for window air conditioners, $50 each for mattresses and box springs, $15 for car tires with rims or $12 without, and $5 per full bag of Styrofoam. Cash, card and checks payable to "Green Team Junk Removal" will be accepted.

"I am excited to host again this keystone event, supporting and expanding civic engagement for climate action individually and collectivity while highlighting climate leadership from the grassroots to the State House," Lipper-Garabedian said in a statement.

Questions about the event can be directed to the contact listed in the announcement.
